Strategies for dementia caregiving
and the research behind them
Empathy. Compassion. Dependability. These are essential characteristics of a good caregiver. But what makes a great care provider? And what does one need to know to provide continuity and support to the patient, family, and care team, avoid burnout, and essentially be invaluable to the client?

When caring for a loved one or individual with dementia, one needs information that has been verified as effective, not anecdotes or hearsay. The articles on this website are the result of many hours of research from scientific journals focusing on care questions, issues as they occur, and patterns present in dementia care. It is an attempt to decipher the ambiguous information in print and on the web to uncover and convey verified methods that may not be currently conveyed to caregivers or known by professionals.
The articles include topics ranging from what behavioral issues to expect with each type and stage of dementia to obtaining help and care services offering practices that maintain functioning. Topics addressed include setbacks and uncertainty in dementia, role captivity, loss, and dementia grief in those that remain.
The goal of this website is to assist others in their journeys with dementia and the twists and turns encountered along the way. There is no happy ending to the chronic illness of dementia, but we can improve the quality of life for everyone involved if we have answers to the difficult questions we ask. Check back often. Articles will continually be added and your input and suggestions for topics are welcome via the contact form below.
The material included is from the draft of my book, Patterns on Purpose: Deciphering Dementia.
